We love to bring in the new year with Kenyan coffees. Short, cold days and long, dark nights put us in the mood for savory coffee. Flavorful coffee after the holidays with a break from the sweet indulgences of December. This Kenyan offering from the Gicherori factory is a refreshing, comforting way to celebrate the New Year!

Located on the slopes of Mt. Kenya the Gicherori factory processes coffees grown in deep, rich, red volcanic soils. The factory is a member of the Kibugu Farmer Cooperative Society (FCS) which has 1050 smallholder farms. Gicherori Factory collaborates with Coffee Management Services (CMS), a partner of Cafe Imports, with a long term goal to increase coffee production through farmer training, input access, Good Agricultural Practice seminars, and a sustainable farming handbook which is updated and distributed to farmers annually. Cafe Imports has partnered with CMS and Kibugu FCS with the vision of establishing transparent, trust based relationships with farmers while helping to grow a sustainable coffee farming industry in Kenya. CMS helps farmers through pre-financing to cover school fees and farm inputs. The factory manager is re-trained yearly, and demonstration plots are planted at the factory to reinforce best farming practices taught throughout the year.

The coffee has skin and pulp removed via the wet-processing method and wastewater is placed in soaking pits and also recirculated for conservation. Coffee is pulped with a three-disc pulper then fermented overnight to break down the sugars before being cleaned, soaked, and placed on raised drying tables.

It is clear in the cup that this coffee has been intentionally grown and processed. We are happy to support the efforts of those who have put much hard work into catalyzing sustainable growth in the Kenyan coffee industry. Join us in enjoying this awesome Kenyan offering.
